21/2/18: Transition year students from the Ursuline and former past pupils- Eva Daniels and Emma Lowe are with us on work experience for the next two weeks. They have been such a great help already and have taken all the classes for some basketball sessions. It was the turn of first class today. It was a glorious spring morning and the girls had such fun practicing their skills. By the end of the session they were experts at getting the ball in the net and even had a competition going between the two groups. It was a really enjoyable session and it was great to see the girls enjoying being outdoors in the sunshine and getting fit and active.

21/2/18: Over the last two days Heather an education officer from The Dog's Trust along with her dog Ted visited all the classes in the school. She gave each class a talk about the work of The Dog's Trust - what dogs need if we decide we are going to get a dog, how we can take care of them and also how to be safe around a dog we do not know. The talk was excellent and everyone found it really interesting and helpful. The girls also asked lost of questions and told stories. Before Heather left she gave everyone a bookmark with the safety rules on it, a sticker and a worksheet to complete. Thank you Heather for coming to our school. We really enjoyed your visit.

19/2/18: Miss. Crowley's first class are continuing to work on their procedural writing as part of our English genre writing. The new cooker in the computer room is certainly being put to good use. Today they made brownies. All the girls are getting so good and measuring and mixing. Once they had the recipe ready for the oven all they wanted to do was lick the bowl ! As you can tell from the picture the girls had great fun and then wrote excellent recipes.

8/2/18: The pancakes Miss. Crowley's first class made were a huge success. The girls thought they were delicious. Our new hob in the computer room  was put to great use as we had three frying pans on the go and made over 20+ pancakes. Even Mrs. Morris., Paula and Claire got to try some. Unfortunately Miss. Crowley wasn't able to flip all of them but she tried with one or two. The girls waited patiently for their pancake and then decided which topping they would like. They could choose from lemon, sugar, jam, maple syrup or strawberry syrup. There were lots of happy faces around the table as the girls tucked in. A huge thank you to Mrs. O'Neill who helped Miss. Crowley make the pancakes. We wouldn't have managed without her. This afternoon as part of our genre writing in English , first class then wrote out the recipe  in their own words. So now that first class are experts at making pancakes they can help their parents on Pancake Tuesday !

7/2/18: A huge congratulations to Basia Choinska from Miss.Crowley's first class who was the runner up in the Society of Missionary Children Christmas Colouring Competition. There were over 18,000 entries. So to come second is quite an achievement. They said Basia's entry stood out from all the rest. Well done Basia. Here she is below receiving her prize from Mrs.Morris.

7/2/18: As we won't be here for Pancake Tuesday next week, Miss.Crowley's first class decided that we would make pancakes this week instead. Today the girls prepared the batter. We split into groups and each group made their own batter. All the girls are now getting really good at measuring out the correct ingredients. We had lots of fun with a few eggs missing the bowl ! But in the end we made lovely batter. We are going to leave it overnight and then tomorrow we'll make the pancakes. Here are some photos of us hard at work .

7/2/18: Golf Workshop: Third and Fourth Class

2/2/18: Operation Transformation: 10 @10

31/1/18: This week is Catholic Schools Week and today we celebrated Grandparents Day. The grandparents of the girls from third ( Mrs.Libreri and Ms.O'Connell) and sixth ( Ms.Hartrey ) came to visit the school. There wad a special prayer service in the hall held by Father Liddane where some girls also read prayers. The classes also sang some songs. Afterwards there was lots of time for a cuppa and some chat and a tour of the school. It is always a lovely occasion which we  look forward to each year in St.John of God. A huge thank you to Claire and Danny for sorting out all the teas and coffees and getting the hall ready for the day.

30/1/18: Well done to the girls who took part in the annual Credit Union Quiz held in the Woodlands Hotel last night. A huge congratulations to the two teams from sixth class who came first and second. Eve Philips, Emma Doolin, Laura Signorelli and Ciara O'Shea came first. In second place were Isabel McCarthy, Rhiam Saeed, Kelly McHugh and Lottie Dwyer. Well done girls.

24/1/18: As part of the Junior Entrepreneur programme, fourth class held their very own Dragon's Den today. The judges were Mrs. Morris, Ms.Fitzgerald and  Mr. McAvinue. The Sockimals group were the winners and now the whole class will get behind this group to make their venture a success.More details will follow in the next few weeks.Well done to all the fourth class girls and their teacher Ms.Butler for all their hard work.

19/1/18: After successfully making brown bread on Wednesday and then writing up our recipes. Miss. Crowley's first class turned their hands to making fruit smoothies this morning. We are working on procedural writing so we think it is best to try everything out before we start writing. As you can tell from the pictures the girls really enjoyed themselves. The fruit came from lots of different places all over the world so next week during our Ipad time we are going to look at Google Earth and see just where did our tasty fruit come from.

18/1/18: We had a visit from the Bumbleance service today which is the children's national ambulance service of Ireland. Bonnie Gannon and Ella Doyle from Miss. O'Connell's third class raised €500 for the service. They did this themselves ( with a little help from their parents) at home by having a cake sale, taking part in a Christmas swim and doing a five mile, three legged walk. This is an incredible achievement for two girls to raise so much money and they were delighted to present their cheque to the Bumbleance service today. A service which is so valuable throughout our country today. Grace Sanderson has used the service and it made her trip to hospital more comfortable and the return journey from Birmingham that little bit easier. Here is a link to their website if you wish to find out more or even make a donation

17/1/18: Fourth class are hard at work on their Junior Entrepreneur projects.

17/1/18: Last week our new oven in the computer room was connected up. So what better way to test it out than to make some brown bread. Miss. Crowley's first class got into four groups and having discussed our ingredients and what we needed to do we set to work. The girls were excellent at measuring with lots of flour ending up all over us and on the floor. We had great fun mixing everything together and then we left our four loaves to bake in the oven. The smell wafting around the school was mouthwatering. When the loaves were ready we left them to cool for a while and then after P.E we tucked in.Miss.Crowley cut the bread into slices for the girls. The girls loved it.Some girls were asking for more and to even bring some home. Baking brown bread was certainly a great success and we are going to try lots more recipes during the rest of the year.
