23rd May, 2018

Dear Parents,
It is difficult to believe that the school year is drawing to a close. Our new Junior Infants for 2018/2019 had their Induction Day this month and we look forward to welcoming them on August 30th.  Our senior ladies, in 6th Class, will soon be leaving us for pastures new. It seems like only yesterday that they were our Junior Infants! We hope they enjoy the last few weeks as Saint John of God girls. Although, remember- once a Saint John of God girl, always a Saint John of God girl!
We are very busy at this time of year with the celebration of the Sacraments. On Saturday, 19th May, our 6th Class girls were confirmed by Bishop Cullinan. Thanks to everyone involved but especially to the girls who were so good. We were proud of them. Our girls in Rang a Dó are working so hard with Mrs. O’ Neill for their First Holy Communion. We will all have such a lovely happy day on Saturday, 25thMay. A huge thanks to Fr Liddane for his ever present kindness, guidance and support. Go raibh maith agaibh to Sr. Úna, class teachers and the choir for giving their time so willingly and singing beautifully, which helped to make the celebration so special. We thank Paula and the Parents Association for all their help. Thank you also to the parents who volunteered to help with the Communion tea in the Parish Centre. Thanks to the parents who provided cakes and goodies - any parent who would like to provide biscuits or cakes please drop into office before 3pm tommorrow. It will be lovely to meet all the parents, grandparents and relations for a cuppa and a chat.
Our STEAM project is still ongoing. We have applied to become a School of Digital Distinction and a validation visit is imminent. Hopefully we will soon fly our Digital Schools’ Flag proudly, with all the other flags. Our next major project will be the replacement of the whiteboards and projectors. We ask, annually, for a voluntary contribution of €25 per child or €35 per family. Should you choose to pay, it will be used to help with the cost of the whiteboards, which is substantial. But the children will benefit greatly from the new boards. Thank you.
We have had a very busy term to date with many interesting trips, events and visitors to our school. Visit our website at www.saintjohnofgod.net where you can read about all the latest news and see pictures- including Active Week,  tin whistle classes, gymnastics, Junior Achievement, yoga, orienteering in the park and drumming workshops to mention but a few. A big thank you to Ms Crowley who does a brilliant job of gathering news and photos and keeping the website up to date.
We now have 5 Green Flags.  The sea-water aquarium is a big hit – the butterfish, starfish, sea snail and flounder are enjoying their 5 star accommodation in the aquarium but will soon be returning home to Tramore.  We will miss them.
Our Sports Day will take place on Tuesday, 12th June, weather permitting, in De La Salle field. An alternate date will be arranged in case of bad weather. Hopefully, we will all have a healthy, fun day. Speaking of being healthy, we encourage you, as parents, to read the Healthy Lunch Policy (see website) and to try to encourage your daughter to bring healthy food to school each day. We are taking part in the Food Dudes Programme this year. An email has been sent out to give you ideas on healthy lunches.
The Walking Bus leaves Aldi Car-park at 8.30am every Wednesday morning, weather permitting. The bus ‘walks’ in the Dunmore Road, to arrive at the school at 9am. You can join the bus at any stage along the way. We have also begun to walk  from the school at 8.30 to meet up half way– an alternative to sitting in the car. It is a lovely way to get exercise, while having a chat. It also helps to reduce traffic outside the school. We have a large number of children walking so we ask that one or two more parents could join the walk from Aldi to give a helping hand. Thanks to Ms O’ Connell, Ms. Dowling and Martina for helping me in this initiative. So, if you can, get on those walking shoes! The Waterford City and County Council traffic calming will continue during the summer holidays, with the widening of the footpaths around the school.  We ask parents to park carefully, with the safety of the girls in mind and not to park in the Kiss and Go area (which is only for drop-off).
To comply with GPDR Aladdin Connect is being introduced to the school. It is a more secure way of communication. All parents have received a letter explaining the system. Unique codes will be sent to all parents, over the next couple of days,  which will allow access to all communications.
During warm weather the girls can wear school tracksuit shorts and a polo shirt. I ask that you would give your daughter plenty of drinks coming to school. The reusable bottles can be refilled with water in school. Please put sun cream on your daughter on hot days as teachers may take them outside to enjoy the sunshine.
School tours are all planned at this stage and I wish all classes and teachers an educational, happy, sunny, safe day out.
Please note that the school is closed on Friday, 25th May as the school is a polling place. It is also closed on June 4th 5th and 6th. It will close for at 12.00 for all girls on June 22nd to conclude Child Protection training.  Thanks again to everyone for all the support, especially the PA. It makes my job so much easier.

Le gach dea ghuí.
MRS. A. MORRIS.  Principal.
