20/12/15: With only two days to go until the end of the term, we are not slowing down one bit. Tomorrow morning is our annual Christmas raffle with lots of fabulous prizes that we all have our eye on. Many thanks to everyone who returned  raffle cards .Best of luck for the draw tomorrow. All the winners will be posted here in the next day or two.

After the raffle, the school is in for a treat as fourth class will perform their Christmas show ' Scrooge a Ghost of a Chance' followed by Miss.Hartrey's fifth class with their pantomime 'Aladdin - A Lad in Trouble' . I've already seen both shows and believe me the school is in for a real treat. Miss.Hartey's girls will then gather themselves together and perform their show for their parents at one o'clock on Monday afternoon. By the time three o'clock comes they will have earned a well deserved rest. Miss. Crowley's first class is visiting Winterval for storytelling in Reginald's Tower. After that they will meet up with Miss. O'Connell's first class to go and see Elf in The Reg and enjoy some hot chocolate and popcorn. Ms. O'Neill's class will also be going at a different time to storytelling in Reginald's Tower. All the girls are looking forward to it after working so hard in the last few weeks leading up to the Christmas holidays.

On Tuesday morning the last day of term the whole school will gather for a prayer service in the hall followed by Christmas carols and songs. It's always a great occasion and a fitting end to a very busy term. I'm already looking forward to Ms. Sheane's sixth class singing the Christmas Alphabet song. Check back here in the next few days for photos from the last morning of our first term.

Sister Úna has put a lot of time and effort into the preparations and we are all really looking forward to the event.

14/12/15: Thank you is just not enough for the huge generosity from all the girls and parents of our school. We were overwhelmed by the response from everyone for our St.Patrick's gift bag appeal. All the residents will be so happy to receive a bag tomorrow morning when the girls from Ms.Sheane's  sixth class will visit St.Patrick's to deliver the bags and sing some carols. Pictured below are the girls from Miss. Crowley and Miss.O'Connell's first classes' with Mrs.Morris, Paula and Claire. There were so many bags and girls I couldn't fit everything in the pictures. Again on behalf of all the staff a very big thank you. Hopefully we will have some more photos to share tomorrow.

10/12/15: Thanks you Mrs. Golden for organising the Santa Dash 2015. Every girl in the school wore something festive and we walked around the park singing Christmas songs. We gathered as a school at the bandstand and sung our favourite Christmas carol. Well done to everybody for being so active and festive.
10/12/15: Our annual Christmas Cake Sale was held this morning. Fifth and Sixth class ran the sale and had a fantastic display of cakes and all sorts of goodies on sale. The smell in the hall was just mouthwatering. A huge thank you to the girls for all their efforts as €800 was raised for St.Vincent De Paul and will go to help those in need in Waterford. The money, €800,  raised will be presented at the Christmas Carol Service in St. Joseph and Benildus on Saturday December 19th at 6:30 mass.
9/12/15: We love Ms. Fitzgerald's Christmas window's. Thanks to Lynn for painting them.
7/12/15: Ms. Fitzgerald's third class  along with Alison enjoyed a lovely morning at Winterval. They went to storytelling in Reginald's Tower followed by a visit to the toy museum. Great fun was had by all.
7/12/15: As tomorrow is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and a holy day of obligation some of the older classes will be attending the 10.00mass in St.Joseph and Benildus. All parents are welcome to attend.

7/12/15:Miss.Butler's fourth class took a trip to the Central Library today for a talk on waste as part of Winterval. They each wrote a report on what they had heard and learned. Below is the report written by Isabel McCarthy with some photos  too.

Today we went to Waterford public library to a Winterval workshop on waste. The woman there told us that in Ireland an average family spends €130 a week on food and nearly €7,000 a year. She also told us that half a million people don't have a sustainable dirt and if we teamed  up with the U.S.A, the U.K and the rest of Europe there would be enough food for everybody who does not have a sustainable diet. We also throw out a million tonnes of waste every year. She also told us about a book called Hungry World. That shows you what people eat around the world. We found out some facts like in Poland they eat pig knuckles and that there is a country that spends €600 a week on food. It was very interesting and we all had a great time.

5/12/15: With just over two weeks to go to our well deserved Christmas holidays .Everyone is hard at work preparing for Christmas shows , doing Christmas art and getting ready for the Christmas Carol Service. On Thursday of next week fifth and sixth class will hold their cake sale in aid of Saint Vincent De Paul. The proceeds will be presented at the Christmas Carol Service on Saturday 19th December at 6:30 in St.Joseph and Benildus Church. Also on Thursday ( weather permitting) we have the Santa Dash organised by Mrs. Golden as part of our efforts to achieve the active flag. Don't forget to wear tracksuits and something festive!!!! Mrs. Morris, Paula and Miss. Crowley have their antlers ready !

4/12/15: Fifth class and their teacher Ms.Hartrey gave up their Friday morning and went to The Book Centre. The shop was holding a coffee morning in aid of the Healing Arts Trust and the girls had been invited to come down and sing some carols to entertain the customers. There was even a raffle and I heard some of the parents won some lovely prizes ! The girls sang beautifully watched on by Mrs.Morris. Well done to the girls and I'm sure we'll be hearing alot more carols over the next two weeks.

4/12/15: Our Christmas Art Gallery is now up and running .It will only get bigger as we move up a gear with all our preparations for Christmas. Photos will be added several times during the two weeks ahead. Click here to have a browse through the gallery.

The Christmas season has well and truly begun.Everyone who visits our school in the run to Christmas will be greeted by our Advent countdown where will add the flame to the candle each week. Thanks again Lynn. Check back next week for our festive doors!

20/11/15: What a treat we had this morning as two teachers and their students from W.I.T visited our school to play some traditional music.First and second class have been learning the tin whistle so we thought it would be a nice idea for the girls to hear some traditional tunes. They told us about the instruments they were playing and their names and played some fabulous tunes that got us all moving. Then the entire school went to the hall to hear more lively music and there was even some dancing.Enjoy the slideshow.
19/9/15: Third class had a visit from the fire brigade today. The firemen were here to tell the girls all about the dangers of fire. They also told the girls what to do if a fire did break out and how to keep safe at home around items which may be electrical or use fire. The class completed a worksheet with the help of the firemen and were allowed ask lots of questions. Many thanks to the firemen for paying our school a visit today.

19/11/15:With only four weeks to show day.Miss. Crowley's first class were hard at work designing their invitations for their Christmas nativity play. This year alongside Miss. O'Connell's girls they are performing Baubles - a tree mendous nativity. They had great fun this morning picking out lots of funny Christmas clip art to include on their invitation. The girls worked in pairs and were busy typing all the essential details. Hopefully their parents will be happy with the invitations and will come to see the girls perform. Each girl is putting so much effort into the rehearsals. Just the costumes and props and a little bit of polishing on words and we are good to go.

19/11/15: As part of the school's ongoing work on S.S.E (School Self Evaluation) as part of our focus on English we have decided to concentrate on handwriting.Every year the I.N.T.O hold their handwriting competition.Last year it was in association with An Post and Niamh Barry from first class won in her category. So Mrs.Morris decided to hold a whole school handwriting competition. Each class submitted entries even the junior infants who have only been in the school for two months! The standard was very high but Mrs. Morris eventually narrowed it down to two winners from each class. Although she was very generous and gave the whole school a lollipop each for their efforts. Below are pictures of the girls who won the competition and their fabulous prizes. I must admit I quite fancy the colouring book for myself! Mrs. Morris will hold another handwriting competition just before the Easter holidays so we hope the girls will all continue to work hard to make their handwriting as good as it can be.
18/11/15: Ms. Sheane planted a hyacinth today with Miss. Crowley's first class. She has already planted one with junior and senior infants. She told us all about planting and what the bulbs will need. The girls were great at answering her questions. All the pots will be placed on the window sills on the bottom corridor so we can watch them grow. As Ms.Sheane herself said the bulbs are sleeping now and with just the right amount of heat and water they will grow into beautiful flowers come the Spring. We're going to have a race and see which classes hyacinth comes up first. Miss.Crowley hopes her class will win!!!! Check back here in the Spring to see just how well the hyacinths grew.

16/11/15: Third class took a trip to Ardkeen Library today and enjoyed a talk about ecology featuring our local Fenor bog. The girls found it very interesting and hope to take a class trip there in the future.

12/11/15: Miss. Crowley's first class were very busy yesterday as they did some paper weaving. Paper weaving is quite tricky but the girls really concentrated and had great fun. The weaving looks beautiful on display outside the classroom. Well done girls.
12/11/15: The school active flag page is now up and running. If you wish to see how we are working towards gaining our active flag please click the active flag tab at the top of the home page.Lots of exciting things are planned for the year ahead.

O'Connell and fourth class- Miss.Butler started their eight week sessions of swimming on Tuesday out in the Waterford Crystal pool. On Wednesday the two firsts and second class began a six week session of tin whistle with Elaine. All the girls are doing really well and already know Mary had a Little Lamb after only one lesson. On Wednesday third and sixth class finished up their drumming lessons with Mark . Wednesday saw Niall Tuohy visit fourth, fifth and sixth class to talk about healthy living. You can read about it below. We also got new benches in the yard. Check out the piece below for more info. On Friday second class- Mrs.O'Neill began their junior achievement lessons. But most important of all was the arrival of the completed Christmas cards each girl had designed .They were absolutely fantastic and such a credit to the girls. Even the teachers want to buy some! Monday is the last day for the purchasing of cards.A pack of 10 costs €10 and all funds raised will used for the purchasing of school equipment. Why not buy a pack I'm sure the granny's and grandads will love them come Christmas time.

4/11/15: Many thanks to athlete Niall Tuohy for coming into our school today to talk about healthy living. Niall is an ambassador for Chia Bia. Chia Bia are a local company based  in Tramore who have had huge success with their range of Chia Bia products.Niall spoke to fourth, fifth and sixth class about the benefits of healthy living. Amongst the many things which he talked about were the advantages of a healthy balanced diet and plenty of sleep. The teachers and girls were very impressed with Niall's enthusiasm and energy for his subject. The school are delighted to be establishing links with Chia Bia especially as they are at the heart of healthy living in our local community. Good luck to Niall as he continues his training in the hopes of reaching the Olympics next year in Rio. Many thanks to Mrs. Golden for organising the talk and for all her dedication and hard work in working towards achieving the active flag.Today was a great step in that direction.

3/11/15: We are thrilled with our completed Christmas cards which arrived back from the printers. The cards turned out fantastic. If you wish to buy a pack they cost €10 for 10.Monday the 9th is the last day for ordering.
2/11/15: What great excitement when we arrived out for our small break today. For the first time ever there were fabulous new benches in the junior end of the yard. The girls couldn't believe it and were so excited. We had kept the wood from the cloakrooms that was in use when we had slippers for indoors. So the wood was given a face-lift and transformed into colourful benches. It will be lovely for the junior girls to have somewhere comfortable to sit in the yard at break-times. Many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Morris who came in over the midterm to paint the benches in such beautiful colours.
2/11/15: Welcome back. We hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing midterm and that all the girls had great fun trick or treating on Halloween night. Full steam ahead for the next seven weeks until the Christmas holidays. This time is always extremely busy with no let up until the day of the holidays. Is that a nativity song I can hear coming from a classroom already?????

Halloween Dress Up 2015

22/10/15: Mayor Eamon Quinlan paid a visit to our school this morning and gave over 50 girls certs for full attendance last year. We sang our national anthem Sinne Fianna Fáil and Ms. Sheane and Ms.Hartrey had taught the older classes Count on Me by Bruno Mars which was so apt for the message the mayor brought to us. All the younger classes joined in with the chorus. The mayor was very impressed and gave us no homework and a half day on Friday. Lots of photos were taken so check out the gallery below.

22/10/15 Here is a full gallery of all the marvellous spooky Halloween art and craft that every class has been working on for the past week or so.Enjoy looking through the gallery. We're all looking forward to seeing the girls Halloween costumes on Friday.

21/10/15: Fourth and Sixth class loved De La Salle's production of Footloose. Congratulations to the school on putting together such a fantastic cast and show.

21/10/15: All the girls had a preview of the book fair before it opened on Tuesday morning. Below are sixth class reading some of the books available to the junior infants and also some other photos taken on the day. 18/10/15: As we head into the last week before our well deserved midterm break there are still plenty of exciting things going on in St. John of God. Below is a list of what is coming up this week. Check back here during the week for some photos.

*The Book Fair opens Tuesday until Friday with all the classes getting a sneak peek on Monday. It will open each morning before school and again at 2 and 3 o'clock. There is a wide and varied selection of books for all the classes and any money raised from the fair will go towards purchasing new books for the classrooms. So why not take a few minutes to browse through the fair and pick out some books? I think this quote from Dr. Seuss perfectly sums                                                                     up our love for books in St. John of God.

*On Tuesday fourth, fifth and sixth class are taking a quick walk down to De La Salle to see their production of 'Footloose'. All the girls are really excited to see the show.

* Wednesday sees the annual visit from the mayor to present the attendance certificates to those girls who never missed a day last year. Fifth and sixth class have been busy working on a special song to sing as well as our national anthem so we are eagerly awaiting to hear what fantastic song they have decided to sing this year. The girls have their fingers crossed that the mayor will give them no homework and the teachers have their fingers crossed for a half day on Friday!

Picture
* Friday will be a very exciting day as all the girls will be dressing up in their Halloween costumes. We're all looking forward to seeing lots of witches, ghosts and other scary creatures. Lots of classes will also be having a Halloween party!

15/10/15: Sixth class deserve a gallery all of their own for this stunning art work. It's clear so much time, care and effort went into creating these magnificent pieces.

14/10/15: The Book Fair returns next week opening from Tuesday 20th - Friday 23rd October. We are still looking for volunteers to help out. Just a few minutes of your time would be greatly appreciated.Just drop into Paula in the office and sign your name. Many thanks.

14/10/15: We're beginning to get into full Halloween mode here in St.John of God with only a week to go until midterm.Lots of Halloween art and craft is being done.Claire has the Halloween decorations up. We're learning all about Oíche Shamhna. Lots of Halloween songs and poems can be heard coming from classrooms. Miss. Crowley's first class wrote a recipe for witches' brew today. She was very very surprised by some of the gruesome , disgusting things her girls wanted to put in the witches' cauldron. Below are just a few pictures of what we have been up to do with more to follow over the next week. Enjoy !

13/10/15: Miss. Crowley's first class got to sample the college life this morning as they paid a visit to the W.I.T campus on the Cork Road for a maths week event. We got a bus out to the college and went to the auditorium for a interactive talk with Bubblz the mathematical clown. Before the talk even started the girls were just excited to sit in the cool seats that flipped up as soon as you stood up. Bubblz had plenty of interesting things with her on the stage and soon she had everyone involved learning about maths in a fun and enjoyable way.Using balloons we learned about metres and even estimated the width of the auditorium and then actually checked with balloons. She blew balloons up to show spheres ( we were a bit worried the balloons might pop). We saw a cube metre and we had to guess how many people could fit inside. Miss. Crowley was way out in her estimate! We had fun with bubbles  and shapes. Bubblz even tried to make a girl fit into a bubble. All the girls in first class had lots of fun and learned lots about maths  (even if they didn't realise it at the time !) Many thanks to Lynn for coming with us too. Check out the slide show below to see some photos.

12/10/15: This week is maths week across the country. Ms.Sheane has created a fantastic maths display at the end of the stairs nearest to the hall. It's filled with fun and interesting maths facts posters. Why not take the time to check it out some morning. Miss.Crowley's first class are off to the W.I.T for Mr.Bubblz .What that has to do with maths we're not quite sure but are eager to find out. Check back tomorrow for some photos and an explaination as to what Mr.Bubblz taught us about maths!
8/10/15: The two first classes, Miss.Crowley, Miss O' Connell and Lynn had a fun filled morning in Ardkeen Library as part of the Children's Book Festival- despite getting a soaking on the way there! We met Wayne who was very funny and he told some alternative stories by Roald Dahl- The Three Little Pigs and Jack and the Beanstalk. He had everyone laughing even the teachers with his antics and drawing weird and wonderful drawing. The girls even got a treat on the way back from Miss.O'Connell and Miss.Crowley for being so good. Many thanks to the library for having us.
7/10/15: What an exciting day we had in S.t John of God today as soldiers Shane and Luke from the civil defence arrived to present us with our national flag and a copy of the 1916 proclamation. The whole school gathered in the hall with our flags ( both school made and bought!) to welcome our visitors on this very important occassion. Members of the parents council and board of management were also invited.Father Liddane and Sister Úna joined us too. We sang our national anthem Sinne Fianna Fáil with pride and then Shane talked to us about why we were getting the flag and the proclamation. Also our strong Waterford connection to the flag was mentioned. Jude from sixth class read a section from the proclamation.Shane gave us the opportunity to ask him some questions about life as a soldier in Ireland. Then the big moment arrived Louisa and Muireann from junior infants had the honour along with Mrs.Morris of accepting the flag and proclamation on behalf of the school. Each school in the country will raise the flag at 12:00 on the 15th of March 2016. Shane also said the teachers will throw the girls a party on that day !!!!! To top it all off Shane made the girls day by saying no homework for anyone. It was a lovely occassion enjoyed by all and we look forward to the 15th of March 2016. Below are just a few photos ( sadly Miss. Crowley forgot to check was there enough space on the camera otherwise there would be more )

6/10/15: Third and sixth class enjoyed a brilliant drumming session with Mark Graham. The sounds coming from the hall echoed around the school and were amazing. The two classes have two more sessions to look forward to.

5/10/15: Don't forget to tune into Swipe Tv on RTE2 this afternoon as Ms.Fitzgerald , Amy and Emily will feature. The big questions still remains. Will Ms.Fitzgerald be gunged or not?????

1/10/15: Where has September gone????? The weeks just seem to have flown by. You can read all about what we have getting up to in the posts below. It's hard to believe there are only three weeks to go to midterm and they promise to be equally as busy as September proved to be. Next week we have a very special occasion as the national flag is being presented to the school by the army. Classes will also be taking trips to the library for the Children's Book Festival. In the following weeks we have a visit from the mayor , maths week and the much anticipated School Book Fair and lots more as well. Check back here regularly for updates.

1/10/15: What beautiful weather we have had this week. So first class  took advantage of the sunny morning today and went on a nature scavenger hunt in the park with Lynn and Miss.Crowley. The class were divided into pairs and given a clipboard each. Each pair had a list of items they needed to find. We walked all around the edge of the park exploring and trying to find some items on our list. Then we moved in and around the centre of the park to locate the last few remaining items. As we had been learning all about autumn in the classroom we also looked at how the trees are changing colour and the leaves are falling. We found lots of leaves and seeds. Ellie found the biggest horse chestnut shell of all. There was even two conkers inside it! All the girls had great fun and nearly all the pairs managed to collect everything on their list. It was Lauren's birthday so we went to the playground and sang happy birthday to her and ate some delicious cupcakes her mum had sent in. We even had time for a run around and play on all the brilliant things in the playground. Miss.Crowley may have gone a bit overboard taking photos but it was such a nice day and everyone was having a brilliant time. Take some time to enjoy the slideshow below.
1/10/15: The girls in first class ( Miss. Crowley) love Go Noodle and ask for it everyday. There are lots of dances and songs to get us energised and fit. Also there are plenty of relaxation videos for when we need to calm down just that little bit.Our favourites have to be Moose-ta-cha and Peanut Butter in a cup. We all found Maximo's Dancing Bear very challenging ( even teacher) and kept falling over but with some more practice we will master it. Teacher caught us mid dance and took some photos. Check them out below.

30/9/15: Click here to have a glance through our September art gallery. All the classes have been very busy with various projects and crafts.

29/9/15: Congratulations to the girls in fourth class. All their efforts with their loom band project paid off. The girls made and sold loom bands. All money raised was used to adopt a snow leopard which is on the endangered list. The girls received a pack with information about the snow leopard and a cute cuddly toy. The leopard will now begin many adventures in fourth class. Well done girls !

22/9/15: Junior Infants got to hang out with the big girls in sixth class for an hour or so this morning. Ms. Sheane and her class took the infants to the hall and read them stories and they even got to venture upstairs and see the big girls classrooms! Here are some fab photos taken in the slideshow below.
21/9/15: A great day was had by all at the RTE studios on Friday last. Ms. Fitzgerald won't reveal whether she was gunged or not. So we will have to tune in on Monday the 5th of October to Swipe TV on RTE 2 at 4:30 to see exactly what happened. Below are just a few photos from the day.
