17/5/19: Second Class ( Ms.Crowley ) , Second Class ( Ms.Dowling ) and Third class had a really enjoyable morning in the park. It was World Orienteering Day and lots of schools were invited to participate in a specially created course in the People's Park. Andrew Cox from Orienteering Ireland organised the event and all the girls had great fun working in pairs to complete the course in the fastest time possible. There was great competition amongst the girls and they were eager to complete the course as fast as possible. We look forward to doing lots more orienteering in the future.

15/5/19:Well done to both our fourth classes who are very busy practicing their skipping on a daily basis for their upcoming Skipathon. Each girl will raise sponsorship money which will be given to Bothar,  a charity which sends animals to Africa to help poor communities . The girls hope to raise enough money to send a goat and some hens to Africa .

Second class having been enjoying tennis there this week .

We have two mapped circuits of the school yard, our Walk in Friday  route around the  block and our Walking Bus route  from  Aldi on the Dunmore Road . We are very grateful to the Irish Heart Foundation for providing the signs .

6/3/19: Our Active Schools Committee has a very busy morning on Wednesday March 6th when Tara Curran from the IHF visited the school to lead the committee in mapping out and measuring all the routes that we use regularly on our school walks.

The committee mapped and measured two routes around the school yard and two outside school routes that we use on a weekly basis-  our Walk On Friday (WOF) whole school walk around the block and also our Walk on Wednesday (WOW) walking school bus route from Aldi on the Dunmore Road to school.

We are looking forward to displaying outdoor signs with these routes mapped and measured in the next few weeks.

You never know we may even fill two ! Thank you to the parents and the girls for collecting the stickers. It's great to see such enthusiasm for the competition.

13/2/19
Thanks to the HSE for providing an inspiring Full Day Course on 'Physical Activity A Whole School Approach' attended by Mrs Golden and Ms Ms Hartery on February 13th. This inspiring day featured fabulous resources on Active Playgrounds, A Whole School Approach to Walking and Getting Active in the Classroom. Mrs Golden and Ms Hartery plan to share their new learning in the near future with the rest of the staff during a Croke Park Hour and we are all looking forward to implementing some the ideas in the new resources throughout each school day.

8/2/19:St John of God N.S in association with Athletics Ireland and Waterford Sports Partnership are delighted to engage in the Daily Mile. This is an exciting new initiative and is simply a matter of walking or running a mile every day. The Daily Mile is supported by senior representatives across health, education and sport who all agree that every child should have the opportunity to do The Daily Mile. The Daily Mile is free, simple and children love it. February 1st, the start of Spring will see the start of The Daily Mile in our school which will run for the month of February and beyond.

The impact of The Daily Mile is huge.
* Reduces anxiety, stress and children are happier.
* Fitness and energy levels are improved.
* Greater concentration is evident in class.
* Health outcomes are improved with benefits to muscle bone density, joints and cardiovascular health.
* Classes experience the pleasure of being outdoors in all weather and engage with nature and the seasons.
* The daily Mile helps children towards achieving a healthy weight.
* Helps to build confidence and elf esteem- all children succeed at The Daily Mile because it is non-competitive and fully inclusive.
* Children with SEN and ASN feel the benefits of regular participation.
* As a social activity, it can improve existing relationships and reduce isolation.
* Children bring the benefits home, often eating and sleeping better and encouraging active family life.
* Develops greater resilience and determination, and promotes the idea of self-care.
